Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees
Hebrews 12:12
Leah was almost at the Village of the Palms when her cell phone rang. She glanced down and saw that it was Shay.
How long had it been since theyâd talked? she thought guiltily. Too long.
âHey, girl.â Leah tried to sound cheerful.
âWhere are you, Leah?â
âIâm on my way to work. Is everything okay?â
âI should be the one asking you that question.â
âI promise Iâm fine, Shay.â
âExcept for the little murder and revenge plot, you mean?â
âI havenât thought about that, actually. Whether or not Nathan is hiding out around here, this is a world that I never knew existed. I wish you could meet some of the folks over here. Youâd love themâ especially the kids. Iâve been busy getting to know the decent folksâ havenât made it to the slimy drug dealers yet. So no murder plot today. Why do you ask?â
âI just hoped that you, that you had reconsidered. Donât you think you should be at the hospital with Jesse?â
âWhat can I do for him, Shay? Thereâs nothing I can do but sit there waiting to get my 45 minutes with him. At least when I get home tomorrow morning Iâll have some great stories to tell him. Plus, I can help some people here.â
âI know you canât stand feeling helpless, but I canât shake the feeling youâre in danger. I woke up in the middle of the night last night with you on my mind, and I fell asleep praying.â
Your creepy little husband can use some prayers.
âI appreciate the prayers, Shay, really. Jesse has dozens of hospital staff with him right now. He wonât even know Iâm gone. If he even knows when Iâm there,â she could barely speak over the golf ball that once more sat in her throat.
âI think youâre afraid to love him too much, Leah. I know you. But your Momma says heâs awake more every day. He moved his eyes along with my finger when I was there yesterday. I saw it myself. Youâre going to miss it. Youâll be running aroundââ
âIâm not running around. I wish I could believe that Jesse was gaining weight, that heâll be in my arms for real soon, but you and I both know itâs not very likely. Many, many doctors have told me so. All the research Iâve done on the Internet says the same thing. Heâs not gaining ground. Iâm finally starting to believe it. Itâs called failure to thrive. Failure. At least here, there are kids to look after and old ladies to helpâ living breathing people who have almost nothing, but somehow live their lives anyway. Half these little old ladies feed the neighborhood kids.â
âIâm coming over there.â
âOh, no youâre not. You canât. If I do, if I do go through with my plan, you canât have any part of it. Itâs mine alone. Iâm the one Nathan owes. Youâre not going to jail for me.â
âDo you hear how crazy you sound?â
âDead drug dealers sounds crazy? Not where Iâm coming from.
