Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees

Hebrews 12:12

Leah was almost at the Village of the Palms when her cell phone rang. She glanced down and saw that it was Shay.

How long had it been since they’d talked? she thought guiltily. Too long.

“Hey, girl.” Leah tried to sound cheerful.

“Where are you, Leah?”

“I’m on my way to work. Is everything okay?”

“I should be the one asking you that question.”

“I promise I’m fine, Shay.”

“Except for the little murder and revenge plot, you mean?”

“I haven’t thought about that, actually. Whether or not Nathan is hiding out around here, this is a world that I never knew existed. I wish you could meet some of the folks over here. You’d love them– especially the kids. I’ve been busy getting to know the decent folks– haven’t made it to the slimy drug dealers yet. So no murder plot today. Why do you ask?”

“I just hoped that you, that you had reconsidered. Don’t you think you should be at the hospital with Jesse?”

“What can I do for him, Shay? There’s nothing I can do but sit there waiting to get my 45 minutes with him. At least when I get home tomorrow morning I’ll have some great stories to tell him. Plus, I can help some people here.”

“I know you can’t stand feeling helpless, but I can’t shake the feeling you’re in danger. I woke up in the middle of the night last night with you on my mind, and I fell asleep praying.”

Your creepy little husband can use some prayers.

“I appreciate the prayers, Shay, really. Jesse has dozens of hospital staff with him right now. He won’t even know I’m gone. If he even knows when I’m there,” she could barely speak over the golf ball that once more sat in her throat.

“I think you’re afraid to love him too much, Leah. I know you. But your Momma says he’s awake more every day. He moved his eyes along with my finger when I was there yesterday. I saw it myself. You’re going to miss it. You’ll be running around—”

”I’m not running around. I wish I could believe that Jesse was gaining weight, that he’ll be in my arms for real soon, but you and I both know it’s not very likely. Many, many doctors have told me so. All the research I’ve done on the Internet says the same thing. He’s not gaining ground. I’m finally starting to believe it. It’s called failure to thrive. Failure. At least here, there are kids to look after and old ladies to help– living breathing people who have almost nothing, but somehow live their lives anyway. Half these little old ladies feed the neighborhood kids.”

”I’m coming over there.”

“Oh, no you’re not. You can’t. If I do, if I do go through with my plan, you can’t have any part of it. It’s mine alone. I’m the one Nathan owes. You’re not going to jail for me.”

“Do you hear how crazy you sound?”

“Dead drug dealers sounds crazy? Not where I’m coming from.
